Pishi's Doi (Yogurt) Chicken

A Bengali favorite and most requested for Birthdays!


Ingredients

  • 2 lb chicken thighs or breasts, cut into cubes

  • 1 cup frozen green peas

  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped

  • 3 medium green chili's, to taste

  • 1 tspn ginger paste

  • 1/4 bunch coriander (chopped very fine)

  • 3 medium roma tomatos chopped

  • 1/2 tspn turmeric

  • 10 oz yogurt



Directions

  • Marinate chicken in 8-10 oz plain yogurt and 3-5 tpsn salt for 30m-2hrs in fridge

  • Add onions, ginger, chili, turmeric to 2-3 tbspn oil, fry until translucent on medium high heat

  • Add tomatoes and coriander, cook ~15m until thick and like a gravy

  • Lower heat, wipe off yogurt from marinated chicken with fingers and add to pot. mix and return to medium-high heat

  • Cook, uncovered on medium-high to high until all the water has evaporated and mixture is thick and sticks to chicken, around 15-30.

  • Lower heat to low, add remaining yogurt from marinade (or 4oz fresh yogurt) and frozen peas

  • Return to medium-high heat and bring to boil

  • When boiling, simmer covered 10-15m on medium-low. season with salt to taste
